2018 Hearts & Roots Crew Position

We are hiring a dedicated crew member who can commit to a season on the farm from April to September with the potential of staying on in the fall. April work days are Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and May to September work days are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with optional long weekends. Flexibility is a must. Compensation is $13/hour with a paid 45-minute lunch and lots and lots of produce. Hearts & Roots does not provide housing or meals. Crew members must have a valid driver's licence, access to a vehicle and live a reasonable distance from the farm. Job Overview

Crew members will be involved with all aspects of the farm, which includes bed prep, seeding, transplanting, washing, weeding and harvesting (with particular emphasis on the last two). Weeding means hand-weeding, hoeing and flame weeding. Harvesting means picking everything from groundcherries to beans to melons. 


Crew members will be required to work in all weather, so must provide their own gloves, work boots, rubber boots, and rain gear. Farm work is long and hard; crew members must be able to lift 50 lbs repeatedly and be able to spend long periods of time bent over and squatting. 

  • Be a team player, but be able to work independently for long stretches of time

  • Previous farm experience not required, but can be an asset, as well as any experience with plants

  • Have an eagerness to learn and be able to follow instruction well

  • Good observation skills and a strong attention to detail

  • Be able to work fast and show initiative

  • Energetic and reliable

  • Must be able to receive critique and feedback

  • Must be physically capable to perform all farm tasks in all weather

  • Have a valid driver's licence and access to a reliable vehicle

  • Must be comfortable with animals
